WASHINGTON DC – Looking back through the body of photographic work I captured while cycling the East Coast Greenway, this one captures me like no other.
When I was there, I had an idea of what I was doing, but could not imagine even as I looked at it through the camera that the result would be so phenomenal. There is no doubt that this monument was designed for the lens of the photographer.
It’s mind boggling to me that the artist could design and and execute this impression for someone like me to capture. It seems to me that the Korean war was (one of) the first to be broadcast ‘backhome” using the newest modern technology of the time.
Although I’m younger than the Korean War generation I can remember it being said that the gruesome, uncensored, images of war would someday lead to an end of such tragedy. Apparently that hasn’t been the result thus far, but it still may be the most hopeful path to a lasting world peace.
I don’t know for sure what the artist intended, only that the result is unequivocally intended. My takeaway is that it’s a statement about the evolving media, and that hope, even more than about this particular war.
